Day 1

Since we have done our 1st trip on 2 wheels to DURGAPUR – BIRBHUM – ASANSOL – JHARKHAND, it has become a passion for us to drive on 2 wheels for long trips. So, this time our destination is BIRBHUM or BIRBHUMI (the land of Bir). This place is also known as The Land of Red Soil. The riders for this trip are Rajdeep (my brother in law), Atreyi (my wife) and off course myself J.

History:

At the dawn of the history, part of the district as now constituted appears to have been included in the tract of the country known as "RARH" and part in the tract called "VAJJABHUMI ". The traditions of the Jainas state that Mahavira, their last great Tirthankara, wandered through these two tracts in the 5th Century, B.C.; and the description of them would seem to show that the eastern part of the district, with its alluvial soil, well watered by rivers, formed part of RARH, while the wilder and more rugged country to the west was aptly known as VAJJABHUMI, i.e., the country of Thunderbolt.

·         Bajaj Pulsar 150 CC UG2 (Black) – 2006 Model – Rajdeep’s

This time I have collected as many information as I can which includes History, People and their Life, Culture, Places of Interest and off course the total Route Map that we will follow. One of my office colleague ‘Joydip Mukhopadhyay’ provided me with so much information on the district.  First time in life I made the whole trip plan. The district is really huge and so many things to see. So, it is really critical to plan the route as we have only 3 days on our hand (Jan 23rd – 26th ,2012) and I am sure we would probably not able to cover all the places. But anyways we will try our best to visit as many places as we can.

Places to cover:

This time we conveyed about our trip pretty earlier to our parents so that there would not be any kind of tension or misunderstanding before we leave. So, it was really a smooth start for our trip. We took blessings from our parents and headed towards my dream road NH2. As now a days we are well familiar with all the highways around Kolkata, so reached SHAKTIGARH pretty fast, within 30 minutes. As usual we visited our very well known dhaba and had Aloo Paratha and masala Tea. We also packed some food as we can not complete the same there. Now its time to conquer the road and reach BOLPUR as soon as possible.

This time we follow the road to BOLPUR via GUSKARA. It was a picturesque journey through villages and on both the side of the road we can see only paddy fields. We took several snaps on our way.

As time passed enjoying the natural beauty of the villages of WEST BENGAL, we forget to check that we are getting late for our destination. So, I started getting several calls from the lodge enquiring when can we reach the lodge. Around 2 pm we reached our lodge at BOLPUR. Just before reaching the lodge I found that my front break is not working and shocked to find that the right side shock absorber seal is broken because of the offroading we did on our way. I did not blame my extreme as this is the first time in last 4.5 yrs I am changing the oil seal. So, we went to a local mechanic and it took time till 5 PM to fix the oil seal for both the shock absorber (as I could not take risk).

Now we are too late to visit any places as we can see that its time for sunset. But this time we are not going to compromise on anything. We went back to our lodge and had the extra food that we have taken from SHAKTIGARH dhaba. Though it was not at all enough for 3 of us, but we can compromise on anything when it comes to trips J. So, we checked with locals and everyone got stunned to see that we will be visiting remote places when the clock is striking at 5:45 PM. Without thinking about anything we headed towards LABPUR. On our way we came across with a local old man who was seeking lift as he has to travel about 45 kms to reach his home. Rajdeep took him on his bike and he guided us a lot to reach LABPUR.

We got mesmerized by the beauty of this temple with Terracotta works everywhere.

We were there for about an hour taking snaps of whatever we can capture and left from LABPUR at 8 PM towards BOLPUR. Our next target is to visit KANKALITALA temple on our way. But with any clue our journey turned into an adventure where the 2 mean machines were riding through the village roads and nothing was there on our visibility except darkness. On our way we lost our path and reached KIRNAHAR. Locals there shown us different path to reach BOLPUR. But we must return through the same route to cover KANKALITALA. So, once again we go back to the road from which we came to KIRNAHAR. However, as it was too dark, so we missed one crossing twice, from where we are supposed to take left turn. Finally we managed to take the right road. Suddenly we found that something is glittering at a long distance looks like a parade of Elephant. We immediately stopped there and found that the herd is coming towards us. My next plan is to take a U turn if it is really a parade of elephant. The more close the group of animals came to us we found that it is actually a herd of Buffalo. Actually their eyes were shinning when our head light fell on their eyes and nothing was visible as they all are black Buffalos J. As the herd of Buffalo passed by, we continue on our way to KANKALITALA where we met with a herd of Cow on the same fashion. Finally we reached KANKALITALA at 8:50 PM and visited the temple. We also had a chat with the Pujari there and came to know about its history. We took some snaps.

It was too cold so we had some tea and started for BOLPUR. Finally we reached BOLPUR at 9:40 PM. We found that most of the restaurants are closed. Finally we found a restaurant open and had a good dinner there and went to our lodge. It was really a challenging as well as adventurous ride on our 1st day.

Day 2

After a great journey on the very first day, it is time to extend a bit long and reach the remote places. So, we woke up early and got ready within 9 AM. We just go ahead and started cleaning our mean machine while Atreyi was busy colleting the useful things like Camera, Mobile etc. Most of the photos in any bike trip is taken by her. So, friends if you like any photo, credit goes to her J. Once we are done with cleaning, we checked if everything is working correctly on our vehicles and left for the nearby petrol pump. We filled the oil tank fully, checked with locals on our route and matched the same with map and headed towards ATLA & TARAPITH. However, rather than taking the normal route we took the odd route through village. Soon, we reached near river KOPAI. We were overwhelmed by the beauty of the nature. We couldn’t control ourselves and started doing offroading on KOPAI river bed. We spent some time taking snaps of the river and its adjacent area along with our riding machines.

Myself with CBZ and Rajdeep with Pulsar

After enjoying the beauty of the river and offroading we started towards our destination. As the road condition is very bad (as only local folks travel either through bullock cart or by walking), in fact no road at all, so it took huge amount of time to reach there. On our way we have done some racing with a train near BATASPUR railway station. Around 1 PM we had some snacks (specially I enjoyed having muri & telebhaja – snacks and sweets) near BATASPUR railway station and left for destination.

Bataspur Railway Station

Finally we get to the main road near RAMPURHAT around 2:30 PM and found that rear tire of Rajdeep’s bike got punctured. It took time to fix the tire as he has modified his mean machine a lot. Once fixed we had our lunch and finally reached ATLA around 3:30 PM. This is the birthplace of BAMAKHEPA. BAMA-KHEPA, literally means the mad ("KHEPA") follower of "left handed" ("BAMA" or "VAMA" in Sanskrit) path – the Tantric way of worship. BAMAKHEPA, goddess TARA’s ardent devotee lived near the temple and mediated in the cremation grounds. He was a contemporary of another famous Bengali saint RAMAKRISHNA. At a young age, BAMAKHEPA left his house and came under the tutelage of a saint named KAILASHPATI BABA, who lived in TARAPITH. He perfected yoga and Tantric Sadhana (worship).

It is said: Tara appeared in the dream of Maharani ("Queen") of NATORE and told her to feed the saint first as he was her son. After this incident, BAMAKHEPA was fed first in the temple before the deity and nobody obstructed him. It is believed that Tara gave a vision to BAMAKHEPA in the cremation ground in her ferocious form and then took him to her breast. Please visit the link to know more about BAMAKHEPA

The road from ATLA to TARAPITH is beautiful with so many S type curves. It was really enchanting for me to see how Rajdeep was taking pass in all the S curves (as I could not see myself). But after making each turn he was congratulating me which seems that I took the curve better than him J.

Rajdeep Taking a S Turn with Full Control

Soon, we reached TARAPITH. Frankly speaking we did not enjoyed at all after we enter there. We pay Rs. 100/- to the priest for worshiping the goddess on behalf of us as there was a queue of more than thousand persons. But suddenly we see that locals are fighting with the authority demanding they are standing in the queue for a long time and now the gate need to be opened for them. In between we saw that some priests were calling people to different small temples and forcing them to donate some money. It had happened with us also and we found the situation really uncomfortable. So, we left at earliest after taking some snaps.

Our next destination from TARAPITH was NALHATI. This place is near the West Bengal - Jharkhand border. On our way to NALHATI we came across to MAHAMILAN MATH where we had some nice conversation with some of the grandmothers of MAHAMILAN MATH. They were really surprised to see that we came such a long distance on 2 wheeler for a trip to The Land of Red Soil.

NALHATI is named after the Shakti Peetha Nalhateshwari Temple, which according to the mythologies is the situated where the "Nala" i.e. throat of goddess Shakti had fallen. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India. This place is not far from TARAPITH. So, we reached NALHATI very soon. It was really a nice place and we started taking snaps.

By the time we are done with taking snaps it was almost 6 PM and we can not go further. But while in TARAPITH we planned to cover BAKRESHWAR and DUBRAJPUR on our way back to BOLPUR. But, when checked with locals we found that at this time we will not be able to cover the long distance and anyways we need to get back to our lodge else all the restaurants will get close. So, we decided to go back to BOLPUR, rest will think later.

Sunset on our way to Atla

This time we planned to follow the normal route through PANAGARH – MOREGRAM Expressway. After sunset as soon as it became dark, it was horrible to drive on the road. The condition of the expressway is really bad and in addition there were many places with big pothole. The more we are driving its becoming a serious problem. So, Rajdeep and myself stood on the leftmost side of the expressway for 5 minutes.

Our Mean Machines are giving pass to other vehicles while we are discussing

He chalked out a plan and we started riding as per the plan. Soon, we reach to a place (can’t remember now) from where BOLPUR is about 50 kms. But it was almost 8:30 PM and we got too late. Finally we reached BOLPUR around 9:30 PM. On our way we gone through places like MAYURESHWAR DAM & KHOAI. But as it was too dark we could not even see what were there L. As soon as we reached BOLPUR, we found only the same hotel is kept open as we conveyed them about our plan yesterday. We had a great dinner there and went to our lodge.

We were feeling sad as tomorrow is the last day of our trip and we will be back to KOLKATA tomorrow itself. So, I need to chalk out the plan in a way so that we can cover as many places as we can and reach KOLKATA at proper time.

Sunday 29 January 2012

Day 3

Today is the last day of this tour and we all know that. But we will cover as many places as we can. I have planned to visit SANTINIKETAN – SRINIKETAN – BALLAVPUR DEER PARK – KHOAI – JOYDEV – KENDULI. I know that it will be a big achievement if we can make these many places before we left for KOLKATA. So, we got up early in the morning and got ready within 8:30 AM. We bid our lodge owner and her wife and left for SANTINIKETAN. As soon as we reach there we found some hawker’s selling local Pit fired pottery (pora mati’r) artifacts. We immediately reached there and bought whatever we like.

Hawker's Stall

Once the hawker delivered all the products we found difficult to take them for the rest of the 400 km, till we reach our home. But there is no choice; we have to carry all the artifacts. Rajdeep came forward and took one of our bag (now he will carry 2 baggage’s, one in front and one in back). I took the bag which Atreyi was carrying and she will now have to take care of all those Pit fired pottery (pora mati’r) artifacts as a pillion. So, it will be a tough ride for 3 of us. But we thought rather than thinking better to go ahead with whatever we had with. So, we entered into SANTINIKETAN. We have seen as much as we can and took snaps.

We finished soon as NATURE was calling us J and left for BALLAVPUR DEER PARK. On our way we net with another bike lover like us who came from UK on his YAMAHA Offroading Bike. We had a chat. He offered us to drive his monster but we need to get taller (more than 6.5 ft) to ride his bike J. So, we did not take the risk and left for deer park.

To our utter surprise we came across with so many deer’s in front of us. We even did not imagine that we could see so many.

We spent more than an hour taking pictures of the deer’s. After coming out of the park we had a typical lunch. Each one of us have more than 5 eggs and Tea and biscuits. Surprisingly Atreyi and Rajdeep ate 7 eggs each.

After having lunch we left for KHOAI. My target was to get in touch with BAUL’s and listen to their songs of Red Soil.

We followed the route through Red Soil from BALLAVPUR DEER PARK to KHOAI. On our route we came across to this house called ‘AMAR KUTHI’.

BAUL: BAUL’s are a group of mystic minstrels from Bengal. The term BAUL refers to both a syncretic religious sect and a musical tradition used as a vehicle to express BAUL thought. BAUL’s are a very heterogeneous group, with many different streams to the sect, but their membership mainly consists of Vaishnavite Hindus and Sufi Muslims. They can be often identified by their distinctive clothes and musical instruments, such as the EKTARA. Though BAUL’s comprise only a small fraction of the Bengali population, their influence on the culture of Bengal is considerable. In 2005, the BAUL tradition was included in the list of "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO.

As soon as we reached there we got surprised to see that the fair (MELA) was over. I felt very sad that it is noon and we would not found any BAUL to listen to their FOLK SONGS. I asked a person visiting the fair and he pointed towards a big tree and told us we may found someone there. As soon as I took a turn towards the big tree, I got amazed to see that one BAUL was singing. Immediately we went there. Soon, I found that he was Jagannath Das Baul and won many medals in INDIA as well as in BANGLADESH.

Jagannath Das Baul in full mood

We spent about 1 hour listening to his songs. He sang Lal Paharir Deshe Ja, Khanchar Bhitor Achin Pakhi and many more on our request. After having a long conversation he also requested us to have lunch with them on the next day. But we have to go back to KOLKATA so we promised him that next time we would definitely keep his request. We offered as much as we can to him and left for JOYDEB. He also told us the shortest route to follow to reach JOYDEB.

Following the path which Jagannath Das Baul told us, we reached JOYDEB very soon. We were enthralled by the beauty of the RADHAGOVINDA TEMPLE. But we are really unsure how long these kind of historical structure will survive as they are going through negligence for some decades. We took several snaps.

Radhagovinda Temple

Radhagovinda Temple

When locals found that we are so interested in the remains of the temple, they shown us a small lane through which we came across to another temple of RADHA KRISHNA. The construction was going on for this temple and I took some pictures (whatever I could manage).

Now, it was time to say Goodbye to THE LAND of RED SOIL. Clock was striking at 5 PM and we have to cover a distance of around 240 kms. So, we started moving towards AJOY river bed. We paid the toll as we are moving from BIRBHUM district to BARDAWAN. We enquired about that great teacher whom we met last time on our DURGAPUR trip. Everyone knows him there and stunned to see that we also knew him J. But he was not there. So, we just conveyed our love & respect to him and headed towards DURGAPUR via RAMNABAGAN WILDLIFE SANTUARY. On our way we took the following pictures:

We drove pretty fast with full control of our monsters and reached home at 8’o clock. It seems that our mean machines are more happier than us after completing an unconventional tour which may open the path for other rider’s to have a look at first what we have already in our own state.

We got congratulations from everywhere after making this trip which probably hard to cover within a span of 3 days only J.

Please be in touch with my blog to know more on our upcoming tours and achievements. Probably we could hunt so more treasure from our very well known districts which now a days most of us are forgetting. Hope our ride will encourage more tourists to visit these places and will help their economy to grow as well with our’s JJ.

Life is too small. Enjoy it as much as you can J.
